Description of problem
I work for a small nonprofit health clinic. We have been having an issue with our Comcast wifi. Our wired internet works fine but we have a strange issue with the wifi. It will randomly lose internet connection. Wireless devices will still say they are connected to the router with good signal strength, but there is no internet connection, no webpages will load and so on. Usually you can disconnect and reconnect and it might reestablish internet connection after awhile, but I am not sure. It's completely random that it is hard to describe and even harder to showcase. For hours or days there won't be issues and then it will pop back up again. It's very sporadic. I literally can be standing right next to the router and I still can't get web pages to load. Oddly enough, I decided to take an old netgear router and connect it in another part of the clinic to the wired network and create a wireless access point, and that works fine, no dropped wifi, however devices connected to it have a hard time finding other devices (including our server) on our local network so it's not really a fix.
Cause/Steps to recreate the issue
I have no idea what the cause could be, I have already had Comcast out and had them replace the modem/router and the problem came back. I would like to have some program other than using Comand Prompt running on a Laptop connected to the router via wifi to continuously ping the internet to test the connection so I can show it to Comcast. I know I cam use cmd but I don't want it to ping every second, more like every 2-5 minutes. The ONLY thing I can think is that since the router is in the back of the clinic, about 25 feet away, and most devices are in the front, somehow it is losing internet connection due to the distance and failing to reestablish it once it's back in range, although even at its farthest away I am still getting 4 out of 5 signal strength bars on most of my devices. And as I said before, I can literally walk up right next to it and it is still not loading webpages.
What I've tried so far to resolve the issue
As written above, I had Comcast come out and replace the router. However, I don't want to have them out again as they screwed up my router's custom settings and the L1 tech was clueless about basic router functionality, not sure how to re-setup my static IP addresses and even telling me that I had to pay for static IP addresses on my local network for my server and printers....So I would like to have a program that is like this: http://ift.tt/2qFncu8 I really need something free since it is a nonprofit and I am doing this for them on a volunteer basis. Even something with an unlimited Free trial would work great, or any other suggestions to help solve this issue. Thanks.
