On new years eve my friend knocked over a can of cider which spilled on the table that my aero 15 was on, the cider seeped underneath from the front. I lifted it up as fast as I could. The laptop turned itself off almost instantly and it was already unplugged. The first thing I thought to do was to put it in a baking tray and cover it with rice.
I left it for nearly 48 hours and then tried turning it on (I know that's a stupid thing to do but I couldn't help myself) It powered on and showed the gigabyte logo and the f-key options for bios etc. It never loads past that screen. None of the f keys do anything, I tried plugging in a external keyboard and that didn't work either.
I was quite out of it at the time and thinking back if I had just rinsed away the cider with water and then let it dry the problem would probably be much less severe. :(
I contacted a repair company gigabyte recommended and they quoted me £800 for a new motherboard and labour costs, assuming that was the issue. I really don't have that kind of money and if I have to replace the entire motherboard I might as well attempt to clean it myself first.
Here is where i'm at so far. As you can see the is sticky dried cider coating the ram and battery. I have no doubt there is much more to discover.
I researched a bit online on how to clean liquid damaged electronics and purchased some 99% isopropyl alcohol and I'm planning on getting some distilled water tomorrow.
Could anyone advise me on how to proceed with cleaning my laptop?
Here are my questions :
- Are q-tips the right choice or should I use cotton balls or a toothbrush?
- How do I go about removing the battery?
- How far should I go regarding dismantling it?
- Is there any guide online on how to dismantle a aero 15?
Any help would be much appreciated!
