How does backward compatibility work? I thought everything is compatible, and that you'll be bottlenecked by the lowest standard (ie: ac laptop with n router will work like an n device), but this table says some standards aren't compatible.
-
Spatial streams/beamforming: Focusing the signal in certain directions instead of a 3D sphere, making intense signals in the direction of your devices. Does this benefit hold for older wifi devices? (ie: would a g laptop work better with an ac router than a g router? Since the ac router has spatial streams, it would focus more of the signal onto the device)

My personal router has a PHY type of 802.11g/n. How is this different from n alone? According to the table, n does everything g does, and then some. The only difference is the "modulation scheme", dunno if that matters.

What's the relation between PHY type and 802.11 standard? The program I'm using says I have a PHY type of 802.11g/n, and a 802.11standard of 802.11d/i. I'm not entirely sure what the latter standard means, or if it matters.
Thanks in advance, any answers to any of these questions would be helpful.
