I'm a university student, at the beginning of this semester I was looking for a part time job through my school to help with rent. I saw an opening for on the job board for an IT position stationed in my major's department, which I applied for because assisting my own professors would be beneficial to me for a number of reasons. I had never worked in IT in a professional setting before, but hoped my experience as the 'family IT guy' would set me up well. I got the job and learned the ropes pretty fast, and have really enjoyed it so far. However, there's one thing I'd like to hear some thoughts on! By far the most often ticket I get is to update or install new software on professor's school issued laptops. I go to their office, connect to the network drive, pull the installer to the desktop, and run it. Downloading the installer usually takes 15+ minutes on my school's slow network, and then the installation 5-10 depending on the program. All of this is maybe 5-6 clicks and the rest waiting.
What do you do during this time?
I can't help but overthink and feel awkward while I sit there with the professor often sitting behind me while I go "yup... any minute now...it'll get there..."
I guess I'm answering my own question in that I should use this time to make conversation with the professor and generally schmooze. I'd still love to hear others thoughts on this, I'm sure you all would be able to relate in some way. Do your clients usually sit and watch you work on their computers, or is that exclusive to my work setting?
