I just found my old Asus U52F laptop from college, and I was hoping to gift it to a friend of mine for Christmas. I replaced the OEM HDD with a new (but smaller) SSD, and ran the OEM Asus recovery discs I made when I first bought the computer (multiple times).
The recovery process runs through all the discs, and looks like it's actually doing something, but after all is said and done it still boots to a BIOS looking screen saying "Reboot and select proper boot device".
I checked the new SSD with a Ubuntu USB, and it appears that absolutely nothing was installed onto the SSD during the recovery process. I would just install Ubuntu and gift it that way, but she's only ever used Windows, would take a very long time for her to learn, and I'd probably not be a good teacher because I only have used it a handful of times just messing around with it.
Note: My Google fu was fairly week while looking into this, but one possible issue I ran into was that the recovery discs may not work with a HDD/SSD that was not OEM size. If this is the case, how can I get this thing running. I have sensitive info on OEM HDD so I cant wipe it and restore there, and I'd rather not buy another HDD of the same size (640gb).
