Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman (Yisrael Beytenu) responded Sunday to the discovery and demolition by the IDF of a terror tunnel near the Gaza border.

"Terror tunnels which cross the border into Israel and threaten our sovereignty are a threat we will not accept, and we will invest every possible resource in removing this threat," Liberman said.

Liberman added that "through a joint effort of the IDF, the Defense Ministry and [domestic] defense industries, we have achieved new technological capabilities in the struggle against tunnel terror. I hope that in the coming months the terror tunnel threat will become a thing of the past."

The IDF earlier reported that a terror tunnel built in the area of Khan Yunis, a city in Gaza, has been demolished. "This is the second tunnel uncovered in the past month, and at this time forces are busy neutralizing the tunnel," IDF spokesman Ronen Manelis said.

"The tunnel is a very important one," he added. "It belongs to the Hamas organization and it penetrates 300 meters (984 feet) into Israeli territory."

The IDF says that, in the past few weeks, it has been monitoring the tunnel, and at no point has it posed a threat to the citizens of Israel.

It is estimated that there were no Hamas terrorists inside the tunnel while it was being demolished.
