Hi all,
I'm working with a relatively old system here that's been stable since 2011:
Intel Core i5 2500k @ 4.2GHz Asus P8Z68-V Pro 4x 4GB Corsair DDR3-1600 RAM
About a week ago out of the blue I started to notice random BSODs in Windows happening about 1x per day. After looking up the BSOD screens I was pointed to the RAM as a potential issue.
( Note that I only removed the RAM once about 4 years ago to install a new CPU cooler and overclock, but at that time the system was passing all of its tests.)
Sure enough when I ran Memtest86 the system was failing to pass the tests, as seen here. The pattern is always the same: test 5 fails first with a single entry, test 6 passes, and then 7 and 8 start to show failures.
However, when I test each stick individually or attempt to test them in dual channel mode, all tests pass. It's only when I put all four sticks into the system that memtest86 fails.
I've also tried reverting everything in my BIOS to the factory defaults, and disabling any kind of overclocking I have set up, but the system still shows the same pattern: passes with 1 stick and 2 sticks (both slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4) but fails with all four.
I've spent the last 3 nights testing to validate all possible combinations of RAM sticks and RAM slots. At this point I'm convinced that the RAM sticks are not the issue... but I'm stumped as to what the real problem is.
