Just bought a refurbished Lenovo 11e Yoga laptop. The machine is an "education" edition. For that reason, I can only imagine it was previously under the care of students who did nothing but download virus-ridden porn. I swapped out the hard drive for an SSD that I have, but didn't yet install an OS.
The other night, I booted a live session of Linux Mint (verified the ISO using their pgp key and hash file), and made an online purchase with a credit card.
1 day later, there are now a few fraudulent charges to a national grocery franchise (totaling maybe $130) on that card.
Is it possible/likely that the UEFI or other firmware could be infected with a keylogger? Not the first time that fraudulent charges have shown up on a card which my wife frequently uses for groceries and stuff, but the timing is unsettling.
When I bought it, the UUID, serial no., and model type were not entered into the firmware; I had to get Lenovo's maintenance software to enter that info manually. I gather that this is a common result of replacing the motherboard, so presumably the mobo isn't original.
Shame, because it was only $200, but this has me pretty spooked and wanting to return it.
There is a new BIOS version available which I could install, but I'm not sure that would really eradicate any firmware malware, and I assume it's possible to have malware in the firmware of some other component besides the BIOS, no?
