Client's Dell Latitude 3480 is suddenly prompting for a Bitlocker Recovery Key. This is a stand-alone machine, not connected through Active Directory to a domain. It was purchased from new about 6 months ago, Win 10 x64. We didn't enable Bitlocker, although I now wonder if it was enabled by the factory. As such we have no recovery key, and client logged in with a local account not an MS account so any key has not been backed up to an MS account or OneDrive, and I have logged into http://ift.tt/2kLbLe4 for the client (who has Office 365 E3) but "This functionality is not enabled or not available".
I have removed the HDD and attempted to access it with another machine, but the HDD, as I expected, is encrypted.
It very much looks like I will have to format the drive and rebuild W10 etc completely. Fortunately client's work (he's a writer) is all backed up on 1TB dropbox, so this is a hassle more than anything.
Can anyone shed light on how this might have happened? Would Bitlocker have been enabled by default (I presume this laptop has a TPM module) - but surely then this is an accident waiting to happen, and has probably been triggered by a hardware component update, either through Windows update or Dell update manager.
I have never much worked with Bitlocker, and don't work in a corporate environment - mostly provide support for self-employed people who work on one or two machines.
If this is what has happened, I am going to have to check on the Dell Latitudes I have helped clients purchase in the last few years, and make sure that if Bitlocker is enabled that we generate a recovery key. But rather scratching my head here, and would appreciate anyone who can shed light or make suggestions. I doubt that there is anything I can do by way of recovery, but it would be good to be able to understand what has happened.
