Background story (optional read): A couple weeks ago, I received a call from my area code. I don't typically answer numbers I don't recognize, but I did this time because I recognized the area code. Since then, I've learned about call spoofing, and it's unlikely I'll pick up any unknown numbers unless 1. they leave me a voicemail, or 2. I'm expecting a call from a known person but unknown number.

This person said they received 2 calls from me (from my number), but I wasn't the one who made those calls. He was a lot nicer than I was, because I figured HE was the scammer, and now I sort of feel bad. At the time I just figured he had the wrong number and moved on with my life.

About a week ago, my SO also picked up a call from the same area code, and the person who called him had the same issue of receiving calls from his number without him placing them.

Yesterday a friend posted on facebook with the same issue. She has a different area code.

ETA: we all have androids, if that makes any difference.

From what I've learned, call spoofing (placing a call and making it look like the call is being placed from a different number) is relatively easy. Call spoofing itself is also not illegal in all cases. Here's the FCC: http://ift.tt/1VP3voe

The FCC doesn't give specific guidance on using an individual's existing number, as far as I can tell. This seems wrong to me, but maybe it isn't. They ask you to report it, but it feels to me like I'm reporting myself for something I didn't do. Are calls traceable back to where they were actually made from, instead of just where they look like they were made from? Is this privileged information?

The phone companies will tell you just to not give out personal information over the phone (duh) (http://ift.tt/2jx6Hdt) and probably to change your number. I'm not seeing it as worthwhile to change my number because from what I understand, any number can be spoofed, so it could just happen again. Unless, of course, someone is getting hundreds of calls a day (I'm not, at this point).

Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.

TL;DR --Is there any way to prevent call spoofing? Is there any way to find out who has been spoofing my number? Should I report my number being spoofed (and why/why not?)

Thanks in advance! :)
