I downloaded a virus (UPDATE)-News of the United States was founded in 1933 by David Lawrence (1888-1973), which also started the World Report in 1946. The two magazines are covering national and international news separately, but Lawrence combines them into news reports of U.S. in World and 1948 [1] and Later sold the magazine to its employees. Historically, this magazine tends to be a bit more conservative than the two main competitors, Time and Newsweek, and focus more on the story of economic, health, and education. It's also distancing news, entertainment and sports celebrities. [2] an important milestone in the history of the beginning of the magazine is including the introduction of the "Washington Whispers" column in 1934 and the column "News You Can Use" in 1952. I made a post before about how I managed to download a virus. Here is a link to the post, and here is what is said:

I was looking for a gif to video converter and found this video showing a program which looked like what I needed. And for some reason I thought it was a good idea to download it, via the link in the video's description.

The next time I turned on my PC, an seemingly infinite amount of dialogue boxes popped up, telling me that an update is available. Obviously I immediately uninstalled the program, but this message popped up afterwards, telling me some elements could not be removed.

And now I still get the same flood of reminders at start up that take a couple of minutes of holding down the escape key to close (can't find them in the Task Manager). The difference is that now they just look like this, and occasionally this notifiaction will pop up while I hold down the escape key to close all the reminders.

I ran Malwarebytes since, as well as a Windows Defender, and one, I don't remember which, found a threat and I told the program to delete it. But nothing changed.

That's where I'm at now, I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

I have since followed the malware removal guide as u/Dracoliat suggested, which consisted of running:

  • rkill (which didn't find anything)
  • Malwarebytes 3.0 (with “Scan for Rootkits” turned on) (also found nothing)
  • Malwarebytes ADWCleaner (which found a few threats, which removed, but when I check the log file now I can't find what they were, the file looks like nothing was found even though there was)
  • HitmanPro (found a bunch of tracking cookies which I deleted, but nothing it called a "threat")

I now no longer get the flood of update reminders when I turn on my PC. But I do get this reminder at the bottom right of my screen at startup. When I close it, this message pops up, but once I close that I no longer get any messages. This is a lot less annoying than before, but I would still very much like to get rid of this program for obvious reasons.

Something that I've also noticed is that Firefox will ask me out of the blue to enter my master password even when I'm not trying to log into anything (I obviously don't enter it). But I don't know if this has to do with the virus, or is just a bug in Firefox.

Again, I would appreciate any advice as to how to proceed in the removal process. Thank you.
