The US initially denied any involvement in this war crime, as they tend to do, but the testimony of witnesses and returning US veterans forced them to admit to it. Their excuse was that they feared there might be "spies" among the refugees. Even the children?!
The US military may enjoy the respect and admiration of the American public, but the people of the US are not there when these boys, that are later thanked for their service by them, commit the kind of atrocities that do not befit "civilised people".

One GI was tried for his part in this war crime and sentenced to 3.5 years of "house arrest!"
