A couple days ago our household upgraded to fibre-optic broadband, and we have noticed that different devices in the household are getting different speeds. My parents computer, which connects via Ethernet cable to the router, gets 40Mbps down / 10Mbps up. All of our phones report similar speeds all across the house. (range/signal is not an issue)
My computer however is slower. Before the upgrade I would get a consistent average speed of 8Mbps Down / 1Mbps Up. Post-upgrade, I am only getting 5.5Mbps down / 0.3 Up. My internet connection has slowed down.
My PC has 2 things of note: 1) I connect via ethernet, via a Powerline adaptor 2) It has a 802.11n wireless card as a backup connection. I have tested the speed using only this connection and the speed gets even worst, achieving only 0.48Mbps Down / 0.57Mbps up.
I also have a laptop which can connect via the same powerline adaptor or though the wireless, though I haven't been able to test the speed on it due to it being old and not wanting to load the same testing sites.
This is what I need help with. How do I get my PC up to the same speeds as the other devices in my house? Bearing in mind my phone and PC will connect to the same wireless network, and 1 foot away from each other, get vastly different download speeds. I think it's reasonable to assume that there is something about my PC, but I haven't made any software or hardware changes. The only change we've had is the upgrade from traditional broadband (via phone cable) to fibre-optic.
If need more specific details then feel free to ask.
EDIT: I've just tried updating the driver for the ethernet connection and have tested the speeds again. It seems to have fixed my upload speed, but not my download speed. The test I just ran gave me 4.88Mbps down / 7.08Mbps up. Still not getting the same 40-ish Mbps down other devices are getting.
