I built my own desktop a few years ago and took advantage of a free version of Windows 10 Pro Microsoft was offering. It was either aligned with the free Windows 7/8 upgrades or part of the Microsoft Insider program, I can't recall.
Starting less than a week ago, after having this machine offline for about 2 months, I started seeing the "Activate Windows" watermark on the lower-right of my desktop.
When I tried to activate at first I got the error message:
We can't reach our activation servers right now. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, wait a few minutes, and try again. Error code: 0x803F9008
Now I'm getting:
We can't activate Windows on this device because you don't have a valid digital license or product key. If you think you do have a valid license or key, select Troubleshoot below. Error code: 0x803F7001
Running the trouble shooter is unsuccessful:
We weren't able to activate Windows on this device. You can activate this device by going to the Store and purchasing a genuine copy of Windows.
Choosing 'I changed hardware on this device recently' (even though I haven't made any changes to my build in 3+ years), choosing my device, pressing 'Activate' is also unsuccessful:
Unable to activate Windows We can’t reactivate Windows on this device. Try again later.
Looking at settings, I have a 20-digit Product ID, not a 25-digit one.
My next step is probably calling Microsoft support with the ethernet cable unplugged and see if they can't manually re-activate. Is there anything else I should try?
