I was browsing reddit and YouTube when, in the middle of me using it, my computer inexplicably changed to displaying in 1024x768 and stopped detecting my secondary display. The highest resolution I can select for it to display now is 1280x1042. I have a mostly stock build Dell Inspiron 570 PC tower. It's a fairly simple office computer that I use to play League of Legends, watch anime, and check my shifts. The only hardware change I've ever made are changing the BIOS battery and installing some very basic new RAM cards. However, I did this two years ago. The latest Windows update I've installed reads as "2017-11 Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4049011)." My processor is a stock AMD Anthlon II x2 and I have no dedicated, physical graphics card. I use the basic Microsoft Display Display Driver. I have an Acer H236HL with a max resolution of 1920x1080 connected via HDMI as my primary display and I have a Dell IN2030M with a max resolution of 1600x900 connected via VGA as my secondary display. The first action I took was to check my resolution settings, they showed up as I mentioned earlier. I then disconnect and reconnect the monitors. That had no effect. I then restarted my PC and was able to get my secondary monitory to display the picture. I usually have my display extended, however it automatically copied the display on the primary monitor after said restart. I then rechecked my resolution and display settings. Absolutely nothing changed. In fact, Windows was unable to detect a second display at all even though the second display was clearly functioning. I then checked to see if there was an update for the display driver via Windows' automatic checker. There was nothing. I also looked around online to check for ways to manually refresh/reinstall the driver. I couldn't find any I fully trusted. (Might like some recommendations on that.) I then attempted to perform a Windows update as I thought it may be an issue with the latest OS version and discovered that the Windows 10 updating system can kiss my ass. The OS detected updates, but insists that they are still 0% downloaded. I am left at this point. The only changes that I can think that I've made to my system that might have cause this are my updating my BIOS about 2 months ago and 3rd party registry editing file that removes the shortcut arrow indicator from desktop shortcuts. I have since used an editing file provided with it to revert the change. I have no clue if it actually revert to registry to the state it was in beforehand or simply found a different way to reinstate the shortcut arrows. The text in the first file reads, "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons] "29"="%windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50"" with two extra, empty lines at the end of the file. And the text in the second file reads, "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons] "29"=-" with an extra, empty line at the end of the file. At this point, I will simply continue to attempt to update Windows and will update this post if that bears any results. Thank you for your time.
