costa della Patagonia, da più di due giorni. Affondato da solo per un’avaria oppure è stato bombardato? Quel che è certo per ora è che il San Juan stava tornando da Ushuaia, nell’estremo meridionale dell’Argentina, verso la sua base operativa a
Mar del Plata, nella provincia (entità federale) di Buenos Aires, quando si sono perse le sue tracce.
“L’unica informazione ufficiale e certa è che non è stato ancora ritrovato”, ha indicato alla stampa il portavoce della Marina Militare, Enrique Balbi, smentendo diverse versioni
diffuse dai media riguardo a un presunto ritrovamento del San Juan o
un incendio che sarebbe scoppiato a bordo del sottomarino.
In ansia i parenti e i familiari dei marinai: “Preghiamo Dio e chiediamo a tutti gli argentini di aiutarci e speriamo possano essere trovati”, ha detto Claudio Rodriguez, fratello di uno dei membri dell’equipaggio, al canale news Todo Noticias, aggiungendo di ritenere che “che sia solo un problema di comunicazione”. Il ministero degli Esteri ha reso noto che Cile, Stati Uniti e Regno Unito hanno offerto di collaborare alla ricerca del sottomarino. Da parte sua, l’ammiraglio Gabriel Gonzalez, comandante della base di Mar del Plata, ha indicato che a bordo del San Juan “c’è cibo e ossigeno a sufficienza” per tutto l’equipaggio, sottolineando che “non si può dunque parlare di un’emergenza”.
Molto meno ottimista il commento di Julio Langani, uno degli ingegneri che ha monitorato la costruzione del sottomarino nei cantieri navali della Thyssen Nordseewerke ad Edem, in Germania, dove il San Juan è salpato per la prima volta nel giugno del 1983. In dichiarazioni al quotidiano Ambito, Langani ha ipotizzato che nel sottomarino “si potrebbero essere surriscaldate le batterie, il che provoca l’emissione di un gas clorato, che risulta mortale per gli esseri umani”.
