I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu running side by side, decided I didn't want Ubuntu anymore and deleted the Ubuntu partition.

Now when I turn on my laptop, I see a "grub rescue" prompt, and can't boot into Windows.

After some reading I found that I need to use a repair disc to remove grub and repair the Windows bootloader/MBR, using Command Prompt repair tool. I didn't have one so I downloaded an ISO for my version of Windows 7 (Professional) and installed it on a USB drive.

After booting to the drive, I tried to access the recovery tools, but I got this message:

"This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows"

So I figured I must have downloaded the wrong ISO. I downloaded Windows 7 Professional with SP1, tried to use recovery tools: same error message.

My OS is Windows 7 Professional OEM. It has SP1 but I'm not sure if it came with it originally.

What can I do?

PS I also tried booting into a Windows 10 USB, and it allowed me to access the repair tools there (the Command Prompt is what I need, to fix the bootloader and remove Grub). But I didn't use it in fear of my system breaking.
