Multiple sources have been told that Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who had five ribs broken in a physical assault on his own property, was reportedly attacked by neighbor Rene Boucher over a dispute about their yards.
A neighbor told CNN that "quibbling" over waste from the yard was the reason for the attack. The New York Times explanation is a bit more involved: "Competing explanations of the origins of the drama cited stray yard clippings, newly planted saplings and unraked leaves."
Matthew Baker, an attorney for Boucher, acknowledged that the "incident" was a "regrettable dispute" over an issue most people would find to be "trivial."
"We sincerely hope that Senator Paul is doing well and that these two gentlemen can get back to being neighbors as quickly as possible," Boucher said.
Boucher faces a single fourth-degree assault charge and is out on bond. Prosecutors may decide to charge Boucher with a felony due to the extent of Paul's injuries.
Paul's absence from the Senate while he recovers could create an additional hurdle as President Donald Trump tries to forward tax legislation that is opposed by all Democrats and may face enough Republican opposition to prevent its passage.
