President Donald Trump reportedly questioned the varacity of sexual assault claims against Alabama Republican senate candidate Roy Moore prior to his near-endorsement on Tuesday. This comes from a late Tuesday report from Politico.
The Politico report explains,
"During animated conversations with senior Republicans and White House aides, the president said he doubted the stories presented by Moore’s accusers and questioned why they were emerging now, just weeks before the election, according to two White House advisers and two other people familiar with the talks."
Trump compared the allegations against Moore to the sexual misconduct accusations against himself during the final stretch of the 2016 presidential campaign.
On Tuesday, Trump spoke to the press informally to offer a denunciation of Moore's Democratic challenger Doug Jones.
“I can tell you one thing for sure: We don't need a liberal person in there, a Democrat — Jones. I've looked at his record. It's terrible on crime. It's terrible on the border. It's terrible on the military," Trump said to the gathered press. "I can tell you for a fact, we do not need somebody that's going to be bad on crime, bad on borders, bad with the military, bad for the Second Amendment."
While not an explicit endorsement of Roy Moore, the comments mark a split from Republican leaders who have called for Moore to exit the race.
Moore is currently trailing in the polls for the December election behind Jones.
