The attorney general seethed he'd "sue" if he could.
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions may either have the worst memory in recorded history or be a total liar. That's the point Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) decided to demonstrate during Sessions' hearing.
Lieu wanted to know why Sessions wrote on a security clearance form that he'd had no contacts with foreign officials in the past seven years when this was demonstrably untrue. We know he met at least twice with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak just last year.
"What I was told by my executive assistant when we did this form earlier, and then again when I was nominated for attorney general, is that the FBI authority says members of Congress and… government officials meeting people on an official basis, we were not required to list all these contacts," Sessions claimed.
Lieu wasn't interested in Sessions' transparent attempt to feign ignorance by blaming an assistant.
“Nothing in that question says you get to answer any differently because you are a U.S. senator rather than, say, a young police officer. Isn’t that right?” Lieu said.
The congressman proceeded to cut to the chase and explain how Sessions' shifting answers on Russia are so extreme, there's an uncomfortable truth becoming apparent.
“[E]ither you are lying to the U.S. Senate or U.S. House of Representatives.”
Sessions wasn't pleased and decided he'd attack Lieu instead of providing a serious rebuttal to the charge.
“I appreciate the congressmen’s right. I guess he can say it’s free speech, he can’t be sued here. So, that’s just my response and I’m sorry that, that’s my response,” Sessions rambled.
