I work in an office with 10 users hooked up to a 12 Mbps Frontier DSL connection. We currently have a Netgear D2200D modem, connected to a SonicWall TZ105, connected to an HPE 1620 Series Switch that runs into Cat5 cables throughout the 2-story house that we operate out of.
We have constant swings in the speed we receive, ranging from 0 to 6 Mbps. We've had Frontier out a dozen times, and they always point to a WiFi speed test that shows us getting 6-8 Mbps as proof they are doing everything correct and it must be our computers/router/network. We've had tech support out a dozen times and they say all of that is perfect, and the problem is with Frontier. We do real estate appraisals, so our traffic is mostly web searches, downloading and uploading text documents, and text-based emails. I would not say we are high-intensity data users. Sometimes one or two people will stream music, sometimes we send pictures, but nothing crazy.
We have no other options for Internet. Frontier did replace the line from the street to the modem.
Would it make sense to buy a better modem than the one Frontier supplied?
Could it be the cables in the walls that have deteriorated since they were installed 10 years ago?
Is it the router? Is it the firewall? Is it goblins?
Should we hook all the computers up to WiFi instead of the network?
Or, is Frontier's busted ass 12 Mpbs service simply not large enough to run an office on?
We run Windows on HP ProDesks with Intel i5's, they are a few months old.
