Hello all, I made a post a few days ago in the earlier stages of figuring out this issue but pretty much everything in that thread turned out to be irrelevant so I'm making a new one.
So, I had some issues recently where my PC would crash whenever the OS tried to load, and I had to format the drive and reinstall the OS for every reboot in order to get as far as the desktop. I at first assumed it was due to issues with either the SSD (Because that's where the OS was stored, this is the only drive in the system) or motherboard (Because I've had trouble with it in the past). However, after about a week of testing I finally managed to test it without the graphics card (Which was previously impossible as my only screen required a DP output). Without the graphics card, I was able to install the OS and do whatever I wanted, including reboot, without issue.
In order to try and ensure the GPU was at fault, I switched it to the second on board BIOS and reinstalled it. I booted up the system and it was now displaying only at 600x800 maximum and the total available vram was showing as 256MB, and dedicated vram was at 0gb. I know the GPU was working to some degree as it was outputting to my monitor, lights were on and fans were spinning, just that it seemed to be in an extremely limited state. I was still able to reboot normally and access my PC, but the display was practically useless at that size.
I next tried to install graphics drivers, choosing the NVidia drivers from Oct 9th since I know my PC was fine with them. the installation went well, until it asked me to reboot the PC. I rebooted it and now whenever I boot the screen is blank. The screen's activity light comes in so it's obviously getting something, but won't show anything. I also believe the software/OS are working alright because the software control lights are doing exactly what I told them to on previous boots.
Here are my system specs:
NVidia GTX 980 (EVGA Classified 6GB)
Corsair Force LE 960GB SSD
Silverstone Strider 450W PSU
Gigabyte Z170N wifi motherboard
Intel i7 6700k CPU
ACER 4k/2k XB280HK Monitor
edit : I should also say it's windows 8.1, windows 10 doesn't seem to like my SSD
