Last night my computer shutdown unexpectedly. When the computer tried to automatically restart, I heard a strange sound from the case, an orange glow, and the smell of burned plastic.

I unplugged the computer and brought the case to my kitchen just encase it decided to burst in flames. Later on I tried briefly turning the computer on with the case open to see what was causing an issue. I saw smoke appearing from within the GPU.

I'm not keen on starting the computer up again encase it causes further damage, but before I buy any replacement parts (unfortunately the warranty for the GPU ran out a few months ago):

  • Is there some way I can confirm the problem is with the GPU, and not the motherboard or power supply?
  • I assume the GPU is un-fixable, but is it worth having someone look at it anyway? (I don't see any visible damage)
  • Can I identify the cause of the malfunction?
  • Is there anything I should check before buying a replacement?

Thanks in advance!
