I’m a custodian, and among a few other things, I clean a relatively small and local bank in my area. I think there are less than five branches in the state total.
Probably a year or more ago, I found their guest Wifi password posted up on a wall in one of the offices. I thought nothing of connecting to it with my phone, and since then I’ve just shown up for work there three nights a week, for four hours, and browsed the web/watched YouTube on my breaks. So far, no one has said anything to me about this.
Just today, however, I googled something out of curiosity (it’s honestly asinine, my friend changed his Steam name for the first time in years and I googled the new name, in quotes, and clicked the first result, without really looking closely.) Hold the fuck up, the site is blocked, and I’m suddenly coming to grips with the fact I recklessly accessed a fucking porn site on the Wifi network of a bank I clean.
I can’t remember exactly what the page said, just more or less that access was denied on restricted pages, and it showed some IP addresses. I immediately closed it and got off Wifi and tried to access the site again. It worked.
Should I be worried? I’ve read about similar instances of this, but what concerns me is that everyone else who’s done this on accident has been on their own company Wifi, and seemingly worked for larger firms. I think there are about 25-30 people that work for this entire company. People in the stories I’ve read were reassured that they could probably just fly under the radar given the sheer volume of employees using the network, and also their case being an isolated incident.
In retrospect, I’m embarrassed I stayed on their Wifi network as long as I did, but it’s been over a year and I’ve been fine? Just kind of freaking out a bit here. I know it’s not a guarantee that it was even flagged, but if it was, I was accessing their Wifi a few hours after they closed and was likely the only wireless user on their entire network. Should I be worried?
