I'll start at the beginning.
I got a really shitty USB C cable on amazon, which broke. It was plugged into my pc's front USB 3 port, and it bent. I unplugged my phone, and a notification popped up in Windows saying the USB port couldn't supply enough power to the device, despite there not being a device on the other end of the cable. It did this several more times until I just unplugged it.
Shortly after that, I can't remember if it was a few minutes or immediately, my everything like froze on my computer, or so I thought. I reboot. Same result, no response from keyboard or mouse. I go into the BIOS, and the keyboard and mouse work, and I can detect my various flash drives that I will use to boot later. I try Windows again, and nothing.
So I start thinking maybe I've fried the USB controller. But that doesn't make sense because if that was the case, then why would they work in BIOS.
So, whenever I'm in the BIOS, my keyboard and mouse light up. But as soon as windows starts to boot, they turn off and stop responding.
Later I get a PS2 mouse and keyboard. The mouse works, the keyboard doesn't. I'm able to use the on screen keyboard to log in. I go to the device manager and see that the USB xHCI controller thing isn't working. I try to disable it, then I uninstall it and then reinstall it, I try finding new drivers, nothing. It says error code 10. I google it, but the internet tells me nothing besides to do what I've already done.
Next I try to reinstall windows. Same result. The PS2 mouse works, but nothing else. Not even flash drives.
So I've tried a couple portable linux distros. I haven't actually been able to boot into them yet for whatever reason, but I still have reason to suspect that the issue would persist in linux. I downloaded the Porteus distro, booted it up, got some error message telling me to press any key to restart. So I press any key, and nothing works.
I boot back into the windows disk I reinstalled earlier, and try to use the disk from my motherboard to install the drivers. Still nothing. I've found multiple drivers saying that they're the xHCI shit, but whenever I run the setup executable, it always says it's not compatible with my PC or whatever.
I'm running out of patience, and I'm all out of ideas. The only thing I can think to do now is buy a different motherboard and try swapping them. At this point I'm hoping that's what it is. But I really don't want to have to spend $75 on a new motherboard, and I really don't want to pay someone to fix this.
Pls help.
