Non-essential backstory: I'm on my first month on the job. Only Linux guy. I see a Raspberry Pi that's being used as a web terminal on a large screen. I decide to check for updates. Oh hey, hundreds of updates on apt. I think it's NOOBS jessie? Anyway, I just apt-get update & upgrade and let it work away on its updates. It takes several hours, as is normal in the Pi.
Then the problem: It freezes mid-install. I reboot, finish the update (some dpkg command). Reboot again. It's right back where it was at freeze time. Odd. Finish it up, reboot again. No dice. I do all sorts of things that never survive a reboot, even very simple tests such as creating a small text file, run the command sync to make sure writes are committed to disk, and nothing absolutely NOTHING survives a reboot. I head home. Next day, I take permission to reformat the SD card. I format it on Windows. Format says it succeeded, but everything reappears as if nothing happened. Repartition? Same thing. Repartition on a gparted liveCD? Same thing. No errors, everything succeeds, but I'm stuck in the same Groundhog Day loop with that SD card.

So I take everything home: the Pi, the SD card, the power supply. I test their Pi. Same read-only shit. I test my Pi. Still fine. I test their card on my Pi. Still read only. I test my card on their Pi. Read only also.
Uh-oh.
So all the same shit is happening to my SD card as well now. It's read only in all devices I stick it into. Formatting and repartitioning does nothing.
I feel like I can't trust a Pi anymore? :( I would buy two new SD cards if that didn't happen, but I'm not so sure I want to use this thing ever again anymore. Or should I just blame the cards and a "better" card would do fine? Some replies in this thread suggest there's no such thing as a good micro SD. http://ift.tt/2gINbt3
