Anche le palle da bowling hanno la loro spiaggia. Si tratta della Schooner Gulch State Beach, o meglio della Bowling ball beach. Siamo a Mendocino, sulla costa settentrionale della California, e questa spiaggia di sabbia dorata si affaccia sull'oceano Pacifico. Nulla di strano se non fosse che, con la bassa marea, la spiaggia si «popola» di centinaia enormi sfere di pietra. 

Questi massi sono il risultato di milioni di anni di erosione: probabilmente una volta facevano parte della scogliera, ora invece per la maggior parte del giorno se ne stanno nascoste sotto la sabbia e l'acqua, per poi «riemergere» quando l'oceano si ritira. 


La particolarità di queste pietre è la loro forma perfettamente sferica e liscia. Un fenomeno raro e affascinante, anche se non unico. Altri sassi simili si trovano infatti sulla spiaggia di Koekohe, in Nuova Zelanda, e sul fiume Cannon Ball, in North Dakota. 


Per raggiungere la Bowling ball beach bisogna percorrere a piedi un sentiero pietroso che attraversa la scogliera. Ma una volta superato l'ostacolo, trovarsi davanti a centinaia di rocce sferiche schierate di fronte all'immensità del mare e del cielo non avrà paragoni.
