Do you ever do something so absolutely retarded that it just brings down your whole week?
On Sunday I had a little extra time after cleaning up my apartment and my Windows desktop. I thought I would be kind to myself and update my BIOS. I have a Ryzen board, in particular, an Asus PRIME X370-PRO. I got it on release day and the BIOS was pretty buggy it, I've just been to lazy to update it. After all, I updated the BIOS on my laptop a few days ago and it's been great!
So I download the latest BIOS. Put it on a flash drive, run the updater. And then this happens. Whoops, I'm an idiot. I totally forgot updating your BIOS can piss off BitLocker. Oh well, I'll just boot into the Windows partition on my laptop, go to the folder where I'm sure I put my key, and get this straightened out and be back in business. So after some serious F12 mashing, I select my Windows partition... and then this happens. I am such a fucking idiot. I just realized that I haven't used Windows on my laptop since I last updated my BIOS, only Linux.
So where does this leave me? I go to check my NAS, which I try to keep my stuff backed up to with Windows File History. I only ever set it up on my desktop computer, though I don't care too much for the stuff on my laptop anyway. Of course, except for my BitLocker recovery key. Anyway, searching my NAS returns zero results for the phrase "BitLocker" - apparently I never kept a copy on my computer itself, or thought to keep a copy in more than one place, just on my laptop. Or maybe that isn't the case?
I found some strange cryptic file in the Backups folder of my NAS called "recovery key". No extension or anything. I realize I set up BitLocker on my desktop after I got my TPM, so I check my Gmail, and... Yup, sure enough, this file was made the same day my TPM came in the mail.
So that's about it. I've been spending all week trying to figure out what the hell this thing could possibly be. Does BitLocker ever have the option to create some file instead of spitting out a key for recovery? Is there some way to tell if a file is a TrueCrypt volume, which this may or may not be?
If anyone would be interested, I can share the file. Thanks so much in advance for any help.
TL;DR: Locked out of BitLocker, only thing with a chance of helping me save my ass is a weird extention-less 2MB file
Remember folks, if you use BitLocker, SAVE THE GODDAMN KEY!
