Negli Stati Uniti l’esposizione al glifosato, l’erbicida al centro di molti dibattiti per la sua presunta cancerogenicità, è aumentata notevolmente negli ultimi 23 anni, ovvero dal momento in cui sono state introdotte le colture geneticamente modificate. A riferirlo sulle pagine di Jama è stato il team di ricercatori della University of California San Diego School of Medicine, secondo cui “i dati mettono a confronto i livelli di glifosato e del suo metabolita, l’acido aminometilfosfonico, nel corpo umano durante un periodo di 23 anni a partire dal 1993, cioè poco prima dell’introduzione delle colture geneticamente modificate negli Stati Uniti”, spiega l’autore Paul J. Mills, dimostrando come i livelli di esposizione all’erbicida siano aumentati di circa il 500%.
Il dibattito sull’uso di sostanze chimiche in agricoltura va avanti ormai da anni e in particolar modo si discute sull’utilizzo del glifosato, l’ingrediente base dell’erbicida non selettivo del marchio Roundup.
