I am not sure if this is the right place to ask or not as I am not that well versed with Reddit and i am desprate. I have a weird problem regarding networking.
Basically my issue is that at my company, the new Owner has tasked me with figuring out how to redesign our internal network system, with a specific aim of reducing the number of devices to make it function, and make it much simpler and easier to maintain. (which is awesome) However, the person whom put in place the current system has left the company 6 months ago, and was a 35+ year veteran in networks, system administration and customized the system very meticulously. While I also provide tech support at my company, it did not range in this area, and I deal with customers issues mainly, and only provided assistance in this area occasionally, so I am a novice.
Our current set up is that we have several ISP, and can shape out network so that different rooms, can use different gateways to reach the internet and these can be changed as desired. Each room is its self its own network, and has its own server. Each running DNS and DHCP. Each is connected to our internal DMZ. Each one of these rooms, and each ISP Gateway has a server. Then you add in a Database, Web host, print server, mail server, etc we have 20+ servers. Some of these have or will become obsolete as we are eliminating functions we no longer need, and replacing other with more modern replacement (like offsite managed email). The Owner has the aim that we can vastly reduce our server room size.
What I need answered is; -Can pretty much nearly all of these servers for managing the network just be replaced with Routers alone? -Will it be able to work to have the ISP just connect to a Gateway Server (or 3-4) that connects to a Main Router, which in turn connects to several separate Room Routers? -Will each be able to supply their relative network services such as DNS and DHCP? -In the end, for our direct company operation needs, we will only need to run Database, and a Webserver. We will need each room to be able to operate as its own network, which can automatically assign IPs for computers that are connected in each room, and computers to easily join the network. An pipe to the internet is really all that is needed. -Functioning DNS and DHCP is a must as we will need to use Symantec Ghost in all of the rooms regularly. -Are my thoughts regarding this totally insane?
Can anyone give me some answers, or at least a direction to figuring this out. The Owner has given me a week to figure out a proposal. It need not be perfect, just something that would be functional, reliable and simple. My thoughts are that using routers seems like it should work logically, but i am not a pro by any measure at this, I am trying to learn more quickly
