I clicked on something that was supposed to be an image but instead it downloaded a compressed file, it had "scr" for file extension and i believe it said 7z somewhere. (I think this is a red herring but included it just in case)
I absolutely did not double click it, I deleted it immediately and emptied the recycle bin. Then I got worried and figured it had been a long time since I did a factory reset so I restarted to do one and that is when this problem started.
System came up with just a backlit black screen, I tried to restart it a few times but it did the same thing. Eventually I just turned it on and left it for a few hours and when I came back it was at the Repair/Recover screen you get when you press F9 on boot.
I wanted to know how long it took to boot so I restarted again and hit F9 - just about 9 minutes. So I said wth and went ahead with the factory reset and it worked.
I went through all the windows updates and after each one when I restarted it took 9 minutes, then it started and worked fine for as long as I let it run, eventually I installed a couple games through Steam and they work fine.
I contacted ASUS today through their online chat and they had me run CHKDSK - it says no problem, and they had me restore optimized defaults in the BIOS and that didn't help. They had me try to reinstall the chipset drivers but I try to do that it fails and says "File copy was unsuccessful." I am going to try to continue with them again tomorrow.
I also did an Avast boot scan and full scan and it said no issues. Windows Defender says no issues.
So, that's it - when I turn it on it is just a black screen and it doesn't sound like it is doing anything, then after 9 minutes the logo screen comes on and quickly after that just like normal the Windows login screen appears.
2 ASUS guys said they never heard of this specific problem and I can't find anyone describing this specific issue using Google.
Thanks for any advice. (hopefully I didn't forget anything obvious)
