s the title states, I'm encountering an issue with my Radeon R9 290x in that, after around 5-15 minutes of gaming, both screens go abruptly black and i'm left with no choice but to manually shut down the PC. While I was having a similar issue the other week, it was slightly different in that the screens were loosing power entirely - so i replaced the 500W PSU with a 750W one which as i understand should be more than enough to power a single 290x.
In this case however, the screens remain on, only they're black and faintly lit. Audio cuts out, though the peripherals remain powered, as do all the PC fans.
I was pretty shocked with how loud the card was, though other posts confirm that they are simply a noisy card with the reference cooler. CPU monitoring software reports that it idles around 57 degrees and reaches around 78-80 whilst gaming, which again is nothing unusual for the card apparently. Card is around 3 years old now.
Anyhow I've read a few potential causes - one is that , where there are 2 ports on my modular PSU that could power the GPU, all the cords are stemming from one of them (the cords ending in a 2x4 + 2x3 molex plugged into the card). So buying another cord with which to run from PSU to GPU may help eliminate the issue? Another potential fix i've come across is to enter bios and set the VCCSA to 1.1V. Then set MSI Afterburner to Power Limit -5% (yes, that is MINUS 5%) and memory clock to 1200MHz. This seems a little bit tenuous to me, but of course if it works i'll have no qualms about doing it. Anyone able to weigh in here?
