I have a computer I built in mid 2013 and this past week it began to restart itself without warning or error message. The system kills itself and completely shuts off then turns back on right away. Here are the details of the computer:
i7 4770k w/H100i cooler
32gb ddr3 Ram
MSI Z87 Mpower Max motherboard
GTX 1080 (MSI gaming edition)
TX850M Corsair PSU
Samsung 840 SSD boot drive (128gb)
Mass storage: WD Blue 1TB / HGST 4TB
I've watched my temps while gaming and in normal desktop work loads and under stress the cpu's hottest core gets up to 51c and the gpu never got hotter than 70c so I don't think my issue is a thermal problem.
I ran memtest for 8 hours and no errors were found.
I have noticed under more intense loads it likes to restart but it can also happen when multitasking (chrome/Excel/downloading game updates). After it does this forced restart it will restart again a few minutes after booting and will continue to restart unless I shut off the computer and just let it sit for a while (haven't used the computer in 3 days since I don't know what's wrong).
My buddy thinks that PSU might be starting to go but I was wondering if there is anything else that I should check before I drop money on a new PSU? Should I try disconnecting my mass storage drives or try running on Integrated graphics alone? Would hard drives or my gpu possibly be causing such aggressive restarts? I also wonder if it is some driver or windows issue since the computer seemed fine outside of windows when I was running memtest off of my flash drive.
Any ideas? Thank you!
